Shaft weight and tempo

A few grams can change how fast you swing.

· Maureen Casey

I build clubs all day, and one of the questions I hear most is whether shaft weight matters. It does, though not in the way most people expect.

A heavier shaft slows the transition slightly and can help players who rush the downswing. A lighter shaft speeds the swing and can help those who feel stuck.

What to do

Hit three shafts of different weight in the same head. Watch the numbers and the feel. Pick the one where both agree.

If you are ordering a driver, ask for the weight in grams, not just the flex.
