Iron gapping

If two clubs fly the same distance, one of them is a wasted slot in the bag.

Mapping the set

We record ten shots with every iron from the six to the pitching wedge, discard the obvious mishits, and compare average carry. Any gap larger than twelve yards or smaller than seven gets flagged.

Closing the gaps

Loft adjustment is the first tool. After that, a shaft change in one or two clubs. The goal is an even eight- to ten-yard step down the set.
